Alaska Fishing Jobs

For those who truly love fishing and Alaska there is an opportunity for a prolonged stay. Seafood harvesting and processing companies, plus thousands of independently owned fishing vessels, hire deckhands, processors, and other fishing industry support people all year long.

Many thousands of seafood workers are needed every summer for the Alaska salmon fishery. Onshore jobs are available with salmon canneries and processing plants. They sometimes include great benefits such as reimbursed travel to and from Seattle for employees who fulfill the seasonal contract. Room and board is often available for a nominal fee, especially at the more remotely located plants.

Fishing vessels, such as purse seiners, trawlers, and long liners, hire deckhands. These Alaska fishing jobs can pay quite well when the vessel enjoys a good catch because crew are paid a percentage of the take.

During the winter and spring Alaska seafood jobs are primarily available in Dutch Harbor, Alaska and throughout the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea. You could find work processing king or opelio crab and there are hundreds of jobs available on large factory trawler and longliner vessels.

Again, pay is excellent when you calculate in the overtime and potential bonuses based on the catch. Offshore seafood workers typically travel to Alaska on board the vessel.

One advantage of working in the seafood industry is that it's seasonal. Another is that you will meet people from all over the country, including many college students -- especially in the summer months.

There is little time to spend your money because Alaska fishing jobs are somewhat all-consuming during the busiest times. Furthermore, most of the jobs are located in remote locations. Even if you had time to 'goof around,' it would not be possible. On the flip side, however, you may find just enough off time to go fishing or hiking. If not during the season then right afterwards before going home.

If you love Alaska and the prospects of working in the seafood industry, then look at Alaska jobs seriously.
