Moose Hunting in Alaska
Moose hunting in Alaska is an experience that will be a notch above anything experienced elsewhere. A mature bull moose will weigh close to 2,000 pounds, compared to around 1,500 pounds anywhere in the lower 48. Watching a moose walk may lead to the false assumption that hunting for one is simple. They live in difficult hunting territory, can run as fast as 35 mph, are adapt swimmers and although their eyesight isn't as good as other animals, they have exceptional hearing.
Hunting techniques for an Alaskan moose hunt are not really that different from elsewhere and begin with understanding their habitat. It is usually a mixture of wet, swampy areas and somewhat heavily forested regions, especially with fresh growth close by. They enjoy eating aquatic vegetation as well.
Most hunters choose to hunt for moose from a stand or at least in a stationary position, waiting for a moose to come to them. This practice involves a lot of planning to determine where moose are frequenting and is best done with the advice and knowledge of a local guide. Hunters typically use the practice of "calling in" a moose to them. This is especially important during the rut season of September and October, in which a hunter will make a cow call to attract a bull.
An alternative approach to hunting moose involves walking at a slow gait through areas that show signs of high moose activity. Of utmost importance to this technique is to be mindful of the wind direction, as walking with it at your back will make for a futile endeavor.
The gear required for a successful Alaska moose hunt does not differ from other locations either. A rifle, such as a .30/06 Springfield or 308 Winchester with 180 bullets, is the typical weapon of choice. Each rifle should have a scope that has been sighted to be accurate around 200 yards. Binoculars are a helpful addition for sighting possibilities beyond that distance or as a reliable backup. Tools to commit the field dressing, such as a knife and chain saw or hack saw are important to remember as well. Clothing should allow for layering and cold, wet conditions while maintaining the orange outer clothing for safety precautions. Going on a moose hunt without rain gear would be quite foolish.
