Anchorage, Alaska Information
At the tip of Cook Inlet, nestled between the Chugach Mountains and Pacific Ocean in the south central part of the state is Alaska's largest city, Anchorage. It is home to 279,671 Alaskans, which is more than half of Alaska's population. Anchorage is a magnificent city that's been placed in the middle of a wild land.
The first time that you visit Anchorage, the great outdoors can easily overwhelm you. Yes you'll have the comforts of Starbucks and McDonald's, but you'll also see moose walking the streets, bears lounging in city parks, and fox living it up in parking lots. It may shock you, but the people of Anchorage are used to it.
Anchorage is surrounded on all sides by wilderness. Two fjords reach out of the ocean into the wilds to make up Anchorage's shore - Turnagain Arm and Knik Arm. Turnagain arm lies to the south and has one of the world's largest bore tides. These tides result in 6 to 10 foot waves traveling at 10 to 15 miles per hour. It's great for surfing. Be sure to bring your dry suit because the waters are frigid. Knik Arm lies to the north and west. The Chugach Mountains lie to the east of the city. In fact some of the mountains that are in the 500,000-acre Chugach State Park are included in the Anchorage city-limits.
When in Anchorage glaciers, active volcanoes, snowcapped peaks, giant bears, bald eagles, beluga whales, lupine meadows, moose, and much more are right there with you. There is plenty to do right in the city of Anchorage - fly fishing Ship Creek, hiking up Flattop, surfing the bore tide, wildlife viewing at Beluga Point, whitewater rafting or kayaking on Six Mile Creek, or photographing the Northern Lights. Anchorage will keep you busy for weeks on end.
Did You Know?
There are approximately 250 black bears, 60 grizzly bears, 30 wolves, and 1,000 moose living within the Anchorage city limits.
Anchorage is most people's first impression of Alaska because they begin their Alaskan adventure by flying to Anchorage. It's the ideal base camp for your adventure into the wilds of the great state. Anchorage has everything you need to prepare for your trip, but also has all the major modes of transportation to get you where you want to go in the Land of the Midnight Sun.
International jets bring people from all over the world to the City of Lights and Flowers - a common nickname for Anchorage. Once you've landed, trains take people on hunting adventures to Denali, cruise ships bring tourists to and from the Panhandle, roads access the fishing communities of the Kenai, bush planes bring people on adventures north of the Arctic Circle, and your own two feet will take you into the wilds of the Chugach.
