Alaska Fly-Out and Fly-In Fishing
Some of Alaska's best fishing water is only accessible by float plane. As a general rule of thumb, the easier the access to a location is, the more people will be fishing that spot. So if you're not into the crowded combat fishing tactics, fly-out fishing may be the perfect substitute. Taking those facts into account, a fly-out fishing trip is an excellent Alaska fishing option. Many guide services exist in which a fishing party can be dropped off at a premium location either daily or for extended trips with or without a guide.
The season for fly-out, or fly-in depending on your perspective, typically goes with the weather, but generally begins in May and runs through September. Small bush planes outfitted with floats are the typical aircraft used by guides to get clients to prized fishing locations in secluded areas. Some outfitters utilize helicopters, which have the advantage of being able to land in places planes would not have access to. Options are varied, as guides can stay with the fisherman or leave them to their own abilities and gear can be provided if desired. Many fly-out destinations are actually locations with cabins, allowing for the combination of secluded fishing and comfortable accommodations and meals.
Most people think of fly-out fishing locations as secluded, remote lakes and rivers. But some fly-out fishing can actually be saltwater locations out of remote towns, often in the northern regions of Alaska. While the cost of as fly-out trip can vary significantly, the major expense is the cost of flying. A week long, fly-out to a lodge with all meals can cost upwards of $7,000 per person. An eight-hour fishing trip with about a half hour of flying time will cost around $400 per person.
Based on the fly-out destination, the gear and techniques will be similar to other flyfishing or saltwater tactics. Most outfitters will either supply the gear or ensure your gear will be capable of doing the job.
