Kenai Peninsula >>>
Homer is both a place to kick back and relax and a place to play in the outdoors. And whatever brings you to Homer, the views are the thing that will keep you coming back. Homer is located at the Southwestern point of Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. It is often called "the end of the road" because it is the southernmost town you can access on the Alaska Highway system.
Snowcapped peaks, glistening glaciers, colorful wildflowers, narrow fjords, sparkling waters, endless forests, perfect shorelines, active volcanoes, and abundant wildlife surround the Homer area. Over the years, Homer has evolved from a gold mining town to a coal mining center to a fishing port to a farming area to a tourism destination.
The Homer Spit is Homer's claim to fame. The Spit is a 4.5-mile long gravel bar that shoots into the bay from the heart of downtown. The Spit is full of restaurants, bars, beaches, and boats. It's a great place to come to trade fishing tales or hunting stories.
One of the biggest activities in Homer is fishing derbies. The two biggest derbies are the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, which consists of monthly prizes for halibut fishing, and the Anchor River King Salmon Derby, which is five weekends of freshwater king salmon fishing.
Did You Know?
A popular Homer bumper sticker reads,
"Homer - A Quaint Little Drinking Village With A Fishing Problem."
The Homer area is known for its halibut and salmon fishing. Alaska Halibut Fishing Charters is an excellent example of an outfitter specializing in the big flounder, as well as King salmon trips.
If you want to really see some big game, the area is also great for hunting. Bears, moose, caribou, mountain goats, and wolves roam far and wide. They live all around Homer. Before you set out on a big hunt, be sure you get all the proper permits from the state. Kachemak Bay State Park and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are both close to town. Homer Ocean Charters provides bear and deer hunting trips as well. As they also specialize in halibut and salmon fishing, the ability to combine hunting and fishing into one trip exists with this outfitter.
Did You Know?
There are 4 major caribu herds that live on the Kenai Peninsula.
If you're into outdoor activities, you'll fall in love with Homer. It was home to the 2006 Arctic Winter Games and kayaking, dog sledding, skijoring, ice skating, skiing, hiking, cycling, camping, clamming, or flight-seeing are all popular activities. Homer is a great location to see wildlife. Moose are often seen strolling down Main Street, black bears wander the coastline, and killer whales breach in Kachemak Bay. You're bound to see some wildlife without venturing too far out of town.
Whether it's fishing, hunting, wildlife-viewing or just relaxing in one of Alaska's most picturesque places and seeing the dazzling Northern Lights, Homer is the perfect place to spend a week, a month, or a lifetime.
