Kenai Peninsula >>>
Homer is one of the coolest towns in Alaska. It is both a place to kick back and relax and a place to play in the outdoors. And whatever brings you to Homer, the views are the thing that will keep you coming back. Homer is located at the Southwestern point of Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. It is often called "the end of the road" because it is the southernmost town you can access on the Alaska Highway system.
Snowcapped peaks, glistening glaciers, colorful wildflowers, narrow fjords, sparkling waters, endless forests, perfect shorelines, active volcanoes, and abundant wildlife surround the Homer area. Homer is pretty much as close to perfect as it comes. Over the years Homer has evolved from a gold mining town to a coal mining center to a fishing port to a farming area to a tourism destination.
The Homer Spit is Homer's claim to fame. The Spit is a 4.5-mile long gravel bar that shoots into the bay from the heart of downtown. The Spit is full of restaurants, bars, beaches, and boats. It's a great place to come to trade fishing tales or hunting stories.
Did You Know?
A popular Homer bumper sticker reads,
"Homer - A Quaint Little Drinking Village With A Fishing Problem."
If you're into outdoor activities, you'll fall in love with Homer. It was even the home of the 2006 Arctic Winter Games - Kayaking, dog sledding, skijoring, ice skating, skiing, hiking, cycling, camping, clamming, or flight-seeing are all popular activities. One of the biggest activities in Homer is fishing derbies. The two biggest derbies are the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, which consists of monthly prizes for Halibut fishing, and the Anchor River King Salmon Derby, which is five weekends of freshwater King salmon fishing.
Homer is a great location to see wildlife. Moose are often seen strolling down Main Street, black bears wander the coastline, and killer whales breach in Kachemak Bay. You're bound to see some wildlife without venturing too far out of town. If you want to really see some big game the area is great for hunting. Bears, moose, caribou, mountain goats, and wolves roam far and wide. They live all around Homer. Before you set out on a big hunt, be sure you get all the proper permits from the state. Kachemak Bay State Park and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are both close to town.
