Alaska Hunting / Alaska Fishing!

Juneau, Alaska Information

The capital of Alaska is it's third largest city and is located in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Juneau, Alaska is found in Southeast Alaska's Panhandle on the Inside Passage. It's picturesque location overlooks the Gastineau Channel and it is surrounded by glaciers, forests, mountains, and wildlife of all sizes and shapes. Around 30,000 people call Juneau home, but so do 20,000 bald eagles.

Juneau has a small town feel for a state capital. It is set in the wilds. There are not many cities where moose roam the streets, humpback whales meander through the harbor, and brown bear lumber around the surrounding islands. Downtown has great dining, good lodging, quaint shops, and a lively atmosphere. It's a great place to start your Alaskan adventure.

Outdoor activities abound in Juneau. You may spend your days smelling wildflowers in mountain valleys, mountain biking through a temperate rain forest, picking berries in an alpine meadow, summiting a snow capped peak, hunting a giant bear, fishing for 100-pound halibut, heli-hiking near the Juneau Icefields, or sea kayaking around Orca whales. All these activities and other amazing opportunities are right outside your door when you're in Juneau.

The Tatshenshini River is ideal for multi-day float trips.

Juneau has plenty of wilderness to explore. The Juneau Icefield covers 1,500 square miles. There are 36 glaciers flowing in nearby valleys. Several of the glaciers, like the Mendenhall and the Lemon Creek Glacier are visible from the roads around Juneau. The Tongass National forest surrounds the town and stretches in every direction. Glacier Bay National Park and its 3 million acres of wilderness are a short floatplane trip away. Admiralty Island, a national monument, is another short flight and is home to 1,600 brown bears - the largest population of brown bears in North America.

Juneau was a favorite fishing ground for the local Tlingit Indians. The Tlingits have called the Juneau area home for thousands of years and their heritage lives on in Juneau. Totem poles and other native arts are seen all over town. And their native traditions of singing, carving, weaving, orating, dancing, hunting, fishing, and living have been kept alive and strong.
